Work consisted of repairing a leak in the hot water heat exchanger located inside of Primary Anaerobic Digester No. 1 at the Jacob Hands Wastewater Treatment Facility (JHWWTF). Repair work involves taking the digester off line and draining, purging methane gas from the head space, removing gas equipment from the top of the gas dome cover plate, removing the existing 7-foot diameter x 21-foot high stainless-steel draft tube/heat exchanger assembly with a crane, replacing it with a new Owner-furnished assembly, and returning the digester to service. Additional work included removing sludge in digester, cleaning digester walls of old coating, repairing the old draft tube for future use, and installing a new flame arrestor to bring the digester up to code.

Work on this project included a new headworks structure with screening equipment, a pre-engineered metal building for the aeration blowers and air piping, a 65' x 65' concrete aeration basin with 18' tall walls for the bubbler system, a 26 acre and 13 acre center pivot irrigation system, a lined storage lagoon pond, and modifications to the existing plant. The project had to be built in a very tight timeframe. The project was staffed with up to 28 men at one time plus the use of several subcontractors. Concrete crews made several early morning pours starting at 2am or 3am and were able to form, tie, & pour nearly 800 cubic yards of concrete in less than 4 months. Despite using a new complex forming system to construct the 18’ high basin walls, the crew was able to beat production estimates and complete the project ahead of schedule. Minor site work and start-up activities are expected to be completed this month.
